This picturesque park, nestled at the base of the Flatirons, is one of three remaining areas from the historic Chautauqua Movement. The original structures, built from 1898 to 1918, remain intact today and include such historic gems as the Dining Hall, and Academic Center. The city of Boulder maintains an extensive mountain parks system (tel. 303-441-3408) including Chautauqua Park and Flagstaff Mountain. On the western side of Chautauqua Park several well-marked trails lead into the foothills. The Switzerland Trail, a favorite mountain bike route among many in Boulder. This classic, easy, out-and-back trail follows the route of an old narrow-gauge railway line which serviced the gold fields in nearby Ward. This wide, sometimes rocky trail climbs nearly 750 feet in over 6.5 miles and clings to the side a ridge.
